Nyasa Guruz
The band were first bought to the attention of label MD Spoonface by Kevin ‘Hobby Boy’ Linnett and his long time friend Muriel Russell.
Muriel had been working with the band in Malawi and was touched by their talent and achievement.
NYASA GURUZ is a family band which started in 1999 Inspired by various artists from Jamaican dancehall group TOK, SCARE DEM CREW, MORGAN HERITAGE to Irish boy band WESTLIFE.

The band, made up of brothers and cousins, used to meet during holidays as they were separated during term time. As individuals, some recorded singles which did well in the Malawi national charts becoming either number one singles or achieved massive airplay on various radio stations.
They started performing in talent shows as the CHASE DEM CREW participating in HIV/AIDS, HUMAN RIGHTS, GENDER BASED VIOLENCE awareness campaigns, in clubs and beauty contests all over Malawi.
Demand for the band grew exponentially with the release of singles like “Mumtima Mwanga” “Linda Madzi Apite” and ”Chikondi Chanu”. They enjoy massive airplay and performance requests for events like MISS MALAWI and the NATIONAL AIDS COMMISSION which made them become role models by performing in awareness campaigns throughout the country.
In 2003, they decided to change the group’s name from CHASE DEM CREW to NYASA GURUZ which means “MALAWI’S GREATEST”. They started working on an album project and released another single from the project in March 2005 called ”TUMPALE” which was a breakthrough. It went straight to number one in the Malawi charts.

“TUMPALE” was nicknamed “the national anthem” becoming the number one single of the year and the most played of that year. The single marked the genesis of the Nyasa Guruz musical era and they now hope to continue this journey with FAADA.
