“I spent Christmas 2009 in a way I have never spent Christmas before! One of the guys, Jinke, was getting
married to a beautiful girl, Temwa, on the 26th Dec.

Temwa
Now you got to understand this is a Malawian wedding we’re talking about!
This means days of preparations, 12z of family and friends gathered around and generally a lot of togetherness.

Party People - Malawi Style
Of course as the only muzungu (white person) involved in the celebrations I got a fair
bit of attention at home. Especially with the women.
The elders were cooking vast tubs of nsima (Malawi maize-based staple dish) on the fire at the back of the house and as I was introduced I had the usual problem: Malawians can’t pronounce my name! So i asked them to give me a Chichewa name and at once I became Anaphiri! It’s a clan name, it made me feel accepted in the family. I felt so proud! The best Christmas present ever…

Happy Bride and Groom
The wedding was beautiful from the sound of the choir in the church early morning to the singing of Nyasa Guruz love songs to the bribe at the reception. Nov forgetting the beautiful couple!! It was a privilege to be part of it.

Making it happen!
Thanks Jinke and Temwa and my warmest wishes for a long happy life
together! Houray:)!!!
